Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor David Autor asks what artificial intelligence could enable people to do and who could be enabled by this tool. AI, he says, could be a useful decision-support tool—unlike previous technologies that follow rules and procedures, AI can learn from unstructured information and draw out patterns. According to Autor, the best-case scenario is one in which AI extends expertise, allowing people with foundational training and practice to do a broader set of things by building on the skills they have and giving them better decision-support tools to do so.
